Kinesiology

Overview

The Department of Kinesiology is committed to discovering, communicating, and applying聽knowledge through the interdisciplinary study of human movement. We employ a cell-to-society approach to advance our understanding of the role of physical activity in promoting human health and well-being.

Our comprehensive curriculum engages students in experiential learning. Students are taught by outstanding faculty, have access to state-of-the-art teaching and research labs, and benefit from our active hands-on approach to learning.

Areas of Research

Integrative Physiology

Integrative Physiology is the broad interest in the effects of exercise on the regulation of the cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, including the influence of physical training and nutrition, in both healthy and diseased states.

Mechanics & Control of Movement

Explores the forces that produce movement, how movement is organized for the performance of skilled actions, underlying neuromechanical process involved and potential consequences including injury.

Neuroscience & Behaviour

Explores the structure and function of the nervous system, and the interactions among physical activity and psychological factors such as emotion, cognition and motivation.

Featured Destination: Physical Activity Centre for Excellence in Health Research

Many Kinesiology professors undertake their research in the Physical Activity Centre for Excellence in Health Research (PACE). The centre is state-of-the-art and contains some of the most sophisticated exercise rehabilitation equipment in the world. The research laboratories and community programs provide opportunities for undergraduate students to gain both evidence-based practical and theory-based research experiences.
